Maritime Paper Products Relied on RubberGardTM EPDM for Decades of Performance

The Objective

Maritime Paper Products Ltd. a company in Saint John, New Brunswick has been in business for over 75 years producing quality corrugated cartons and custom packaging. They have found that “by providing the right combination of modern manufacturing, new technology and focused service, their customers can reap the benefits of top quality products – every time”.

As a manufacturing company, there is nothing more important than protecting their assets. Production machinery requires a large investment, continuous maintenance, and above all protection from extreme weather conditions. When the time came to expand their production facility in 1989, Maritime Paper Products chose a Firestone Ballasted RubberGardTM EPDM roofing system as a first line of defense against the elements.

In 1989, EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) membranes were new to in the Canadian market. Asphalt and “built up” roofing systems dominated the market with rigid, tough, and very thick roofing systems. EPDM on the other hand was quite different, the membrane were far more flexible compared to any type of asphalt membrane, it was lightweight but provided critical strength and durability required for a long lasting roofing. After learning about this new roofing system, Maritime Paper Products took advantage of the new technology, staying true to their mantra, and proceeded with the installation of the Firestone Ballasted RubberGardTM EPDM roofing system on their production facility.

Now, over 25 years later, the ballasted EPDM roof still continues to perform seamlessly.

The Challenge

Dowd Roofing Inc.; contractors that installed the roof on the Maritime Paper Products facility have been a leader in the New Brunswick Roofing industry since 1965, and were highly experienced with asphalt based roofing systems in the early 1980’s. When EPDM was first introduced, the company was intrigued by the new technology, and took it upon themselves to learn more about it. By 1988, EPDM had found its place in the industry and Dowd Roofing Inc. was licensed with Firestone and specialized in installing RubberGardTM EPDM Roofing Systems.

Terry Stevenson from Dowd Roofing Ltd. spoke highly of his early of experience with EPDM.

“Since the late 80’s we’ve done a fair amount of EPDM. It performs well, it’s light weight, and easy to repair. The seam tape technology provides a watertight seam, which lasts decades without any issues. Compared to the old tar and gravel, it was a lot easier to work with.”

Tim Ricketts the Facility Manager at Maritime Paper Products was really impressed with the longevity of the RubberGardTM EPDM roof.

“The Firestone ballasted EPDM roof has been performing flawlessly ever since it was installed. We haven’t had any issues since installation.”

The Result

The ballasted RubberGard EPDM roof on the Maritime Paper Products Ltd. roof has been performing seamlessly for over 26 years and shows no signs of deterioration. The strength and durability of the membrane has allowed the system to withstand all weather conditions with ease.

However, each roofing system is only as good as its installer. Firestone Building Products Canada licensed contractors are certified through an intricate licensing process. All contractors attend Firestone Contractor Quality Seminar’s that combine classroom activities with hands-on training allowing them to learn about the theoretical and practical aspects of the roofing system and providing them with all the knowledge necessary to install long last roofing systems.
